Need guidance planning your next semester?

When enrolling for the upcoming semester it can sometimes feel overwhelming to figure out which courses you need, therefore we encourage you to meet with your advisor. Your academic advisor will address your questions and concerns while providing guidance to empower you to take ownership of your education and utilize the resources available.

First determine which General Education Requirements you still need to fulfill. You can see which general education requirements you have already satisfied by running your Academic Requirements Report.

      • Reminder for ACES students, this will show you the minimum University Requirements and may change once you declare or are admitted into a major.  If you know the major you are interested in, you can run a What-If report to see which Gen Ed and Major requirements you will have to meet.
    • Once you determine which Content Areas and Competencies you still need to fulfill, you can use the General Education info sheets found on our Registration Resources page to help you select courses you need.

If you know what you want to major in:

    • You can search for your major’s plan of study. A plan of study is like a recipe – it will tell you what courses you need to take to complete a degree in a specific major.
        • For example, if you were interested in studying Economics, you can perform a Google search for “economics plan of study UConn” and you will find something like this: https://econ.uconn.edu/econ/major/ – this document will tell you exactly what courses to take if you wanted to major in Economics.
        • Sometimes you will be able to also find a “semester sequence” which will show what courses you should take during certain semesters. For example, at the Economics major page linked above, you will see the Sample Freshman-Sophomore course schedule towards the bottom of the page.
      • If it’s a major that you will need to apply to, then it is recommended that students look at the admissions page for that major to see what requirements they will need to meet.  Here is a list of some of the common programs that current students need to apply into: Business, Engineering, Education)

If you don’t know what you want to major in – Explore:

      • Conduct some research regarding the different majors that UConn has to offer through different resources on The Major Experience website, and find some intro courses in order to begin major exploration.
        • Begin Exploring: https://tme.uconn.edu/explore-majors/ There is an activity called “Major Elimination.” – by completing this activity you will be left with a list of majors at UConn that you are interested in.
        • Read more about your majors of interest on the Major Profiles page. On each major profile page, you will find a list helpful intro courses.
          • For example, on the Economics major profile page, you will see that the helpful intro courses include ECON 1201 and ECON 1202, both of which are offered at UConn Stamford.

Once you complete the above, you will have a better understanding of what courses are required for you to progress in your academic career. Try to find a couple of gen-ed courses and a couple of major requirement courses, for the next semester. Your course selection should be written on the Pre-Advising Worksheet and will be reviewed with your advisor in your scheduled one-on-one meeting.
